Bangkok MRT Purple Line
The MRT Purple Line currently consists of 16 stations with one of them being shared with the Blue Line. Further extension of the line is currently on the way. The Purple Line connects the northwestern areas of Bangkok with the city center due to its convenient connection with the MRT Blue Line.
The MRT Purple Line is well connected with other Bangkok metro systems. The line connects with the MRT Blue Line of the same service provider as well as the city’s other mass rapid transit systems, such as the SRT Red Line and the MRT Pink Line.
However, you can buy one ticket for the entire trip only if you transfer to the MRT Blue Line, as all other metro systems require you to buy separate tickets.
Bangkok MRT Purple Line Tickets
There are 3 ticket options for traveling on the Bangkok MRT Purple Line train:
- Single journey ticket.
- Stored Value Ticket Card (SVT Card).
- EMV Contactless Card.
1. MRT Purple Line Single Journey Ticket
The most common way is buying a single journey ticket using one of the ticket vending machines. All these machines are cash only and accept Thai Baht coins and banknotes.
2. Bangkok MRT Stored Value Card
You can also buy MRT tickets from the MRT Station Ticket Office. At the ticket office you can buy not only single journey tickets (valid for travel on the date of purchase only) but also a stored value MRT Card - a smart card that can be topped up for multiple rides on the MRT Purple Line and Blue Line.
3. EMV Contactless Card
Another ticket option that can be used on the Bangkok MRT Purple Line is the EMV contactless card of VISA or Mastercard. EMV contactless cards that can be used to pay for fares on this MRT line are the following:
- VISA or Mastercard credit card issued by any Thailand bank or international bank.
- VISA or Mastercard debit card issued by Thailand banks.
Bangkok MRT Purple Line Fare
Bangkok MRT fare for a single journey ticket, which is valid for a single journey, depends on the distance (the number of stations traveled). Normally, tickets on the MRT Purple Line cost from 14 THB to 42 THB per journey. If your journey requires a transfer to the MRT Blue Line, the total fare can go up to 71 THB.

How to buy Bangkok MRT Purple Line ticket?
There are few ways to buy Bangkok metro tickets, but the most common way is using ticket vending machines. All these machines are cash only and accept Thai Baht coins and banknotes.
These ticket vending machines are easy to use, as you can choose between English and Thai on the touchscreen. Then you just need to choose your destination. If your destination isn’t listed on the screen, most probably you need to swap lines – you can do it by clicking the blue or purple button on the top left of the touchscreen. The exact fare will appear on the screen. Tickets must be bought one by one on these ticket vending machines.
You need 1, 5, or 10 Baht coins or 20, 50, or 100 Baht banknotes, as 2 Baht coins, satangs, and larger banknotes are not accepted by the ordinary MRT ticket vending machines. The new ticket machines accept 2 Baht coins and large banknotes, but they are still quite rare.
Insert coins and banknotes into dedicated slots.
When the amount inserted will reach the required fare, your ticket (token) and change (given in coins only) will fall down into the windowed chamber below. Take the token and your change (if any).
You can also buy your ticket from the MRT Station Ticket Office. Just stand in a queue, proceed to one of the windows, tell your destination and a number of tickets, pay money, and you will get a token and change (if any).
Keep in mind that single journey tickets are valid for travel on the date of purchase only.

How to use Bangkok MRT ticket?
When you get your token, proceed to the metallic gates. Green arrow signs indicate entry points - you need to choose one of them.
Touch your token to the indicated place on the metallic part of the gate. The red gate will open then. Quickly walk through as the gate stays open for just a couple of seconds.
Don’t lose the token, as at the exit you will have to insert it into the dedicated slot for the exit gate to open.
